CCF auf dem Klimagipfel in Dubai

Gepardenschutz soll Weltweit gefördert werden

Dubai/Windhoek (bw) • Die in Namibia gegründete und bei Otjiwarongo ansässige Organisation für Gepardenschutz ist zum ersten Mal auf dem Weltklimagipfel präsent. Er begann am Donnerstag in der Expo City in Dubai.

Der Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) will auf die existentielle Bedrohung der Geparden aufmerksam machen, die auch Weltweit vom Klimawandel bedroht sind.

Anlässlich des Internationalen Tag der Geparden am 4. Dezember 2023 arbeitet der CCF mit anderen Naturschützern aus der ganzen Welt zusammen, um auf die Notlage der Geparden aufmerksam zu machen.

Dieser Tag, der mit der Teilnahme von CCF am Pavillon der „International Union for Conservation of Nature“ (IUCN) in Dubai zusammenfällt, ist nicht nur eine Feier dieser einzigartigen Katzen, „sondern auch eine dringende Erinnerung an die Herausforderungen, die ihr Überleben in freier Wildbahn bedrohen, einschließlich der Auswirkungen von Klimawandel“, teilte der CCF mit.

Am kommenden Sonntagabend wird der CCF im IUCN-Pavillon auch einen Empfang veranstalten. Dort wird der Gepard als Symbol für die trockenen Landschaften vorgestellt, die am stärksten vom Klimawandel betroffen sind.

„Geparde gehören zu den wichtigsten Spitzenprädatoren in den afrikanischen und asiatischen Landschaften, die bereits mit den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels konfrontiert sind“, erklärte der CCF. Spitzenprädatoren sind der Schlüssel zur Widerstandsfähigkeit von Ökosystemen.

Die CCF-Gründerin und Geschäftsführerin, Professorin Laurie Marker, sagte: „Im vergangenen Jahrhundert wurde die Zahl der Geparden auf nur neun Prozent ihres ursprünglichen Verbreitungsgebiets reduziert. Heute gibt es weniger als 7500 erwachsenen und heranwachsenden Geparden.“

„Sie leben in 31 Populationen in 23 Ländern Afrikas und im Iran leben weniger als 25 asiatische Geparden.“

Von diesen verbleibenden Populationen bestehen über zwei Drittel aus weniger als 100 Individuen.

„Unsere Forschung hat gezeigt, dass der Gepard innerhalb der nächsten 20 Jahre aussterben könnte, wenn nichts unternommen wird, da die Mehrheit der Geparden außerhalb von Schutzgebieten lebt.

Obwohl der Mensch die Hauptursache für das Ungleichgewicht des Ökosystems ist, sei der Mensch auch die Lösung“, sagte Marker.

Seit einigen Jahren unterstützt der CCF auch aktiv den Gepardenschutz in Somalia.
