A fourth win in a row has kept the WHS Kudu Bulls at the top ... but only by a small margin.
Samsung Windhoek High School successfully defended their narrow lead in the Standard Bank Namibia Secondary School Rugby (NSSR) u19 Super League when they convincingly beat Autohaus Windhoek Affies 49-23 on Saturday.
Affies started off well at Vegkop Stadium, with two early penalties by in-form fly-half Van der Merwe Tromp for a 6-0 lead, but WHS responded, racing to a 24-6 lead at halftime, starting with unconverted tries by centre Sammy Soobramoney and left wing Jurgen Meyer.
McHenry Kambatuku, WHS flank and a player of the match contender, brushed off a few WAP defenders before scoring a wonderful solo try. Fly-half Caeden Moller’s pin-point cross-kick for centre Davito van Wyk’s try in the corner was also a beauty.
Affies received a shock going into the break as lock Abraham van Zyl was red-carded by referee Daniel Botes for an alleged punch to the face.
The fleetfooted Meyer’s second and third tries of the match were both brilliant, while replacement hooker Tauno Hamukoto rounded off a spectacular attack that started on their own goalline. WHS kicking points were added by Caeden Moller (one penalty) and Davito van Wyk (four conversions, one penalty).
WHS were ahead by 31-6, before Affies finally responded with two tries by flank Walther Otto and one by hooker Delano van der Berg.
Pieter-Jan Strydom, nr. 8 who captains WHS, got an early yellow card – soon to be followed by his direct opponent Ben Burger.
After the match Strydom said: “The ref said something about I hit a player with my elbow, that’s why he had to send me off, but I’m really proud of the boys and it’s an important win for us.”
The WHS Kudu Bulls look to be gelling well, as the backline was in sync, putting WAP under a lot of pressure. This was especially impressive after the short turn-around from their 51-19 midweek win at Outjo over OK Foods Moria on Wednesday. On Saturday, WHS did not even field a full bench after being hit by injuries.

• At Tsumeb, Moria beat Tsumeb Gymnasium 15-12 by scoring three tries to two.
Tries by Benjamin Mostert, Franko Engelbrecht and Joseph Martin ensured the Outjo school the maximum points. Tsumeb replied with tries by Russel Bartlett and John Bartlett, with one conversion by SW Kuhn.
• At Stampriet, hosts Elnatan overcame the tough PSG Walvis Bay Private High School challenge by 21-20.
Elnatan’s try scorers were prop Petrus Nangolo and centres JR Strydom and Raymond Forbes. Strydom converted all three.
Tiaan van der Westhuizen and Julian Pick scored tries for Walvis Bay, along with ten kicking points by Michael Koopman.
