Nghitumbwa calls out ‘The Monster’ and top contenders

One of Namibia’s best current boxing prospects, Fillipus “Energy” Nghitumbwa, has called out the top super bantamweight contenders. The former WBO African title holder, who holds a proud professional record of 17 fights and 15 wins (13 knockouts) has only one thing in mind, namely to take on the World Boxing Organisation (WBO)’s top three contenders so that he can eventually earn a fight with Japan’s formidable unbeaten and undisputed king of the 55.3 kg weight division, Naoya Inoue.Nghitumbwa’s camp believes he has gone out of his way to prove his worth, fighting John Riel Casimero in May 2023 “and beating him convincingly on his home turf in the Philippines, despite shockingly not getting the decision”. The Namibian then went on to defeat China’s DeKang Wang by unanimous decision in April 2024 and destroyed former world champion Yukinori Oguni of Japan within the first round on his home ground in Yokahama (October 2024) in his most recent outing.A confident Nghitumbwa said: “My immediate goal is to fight the WBO top three ranked contenders – Sam Goodman, Carl Jammes Martin and Dennis McCann. “These will be tough fights and I respect all of them, but I know I will defeat all of them and once I’m done, Inoue will have no way to hide than to fight me.”Nghitumbwa is promoted by one of Africa’s most successful promoters, Nestor Tobias from the MTC Nestor Sunshine Promotions, who produced world title holders such as Paulus “The Hitman Moses” (former WBO and WBA lightweight world champion), Paulus “The Rock” Ambunda (former WBO bantamweight champion) and Julius Indongo (former WBA, IBF and IBF light welterweight world champion). Tobias says: “Energy is a special fighter with incredible power and boxing intelligence. I have developed a lot of world champions and in him I see the next super bantamweight world champion. “We have invited the top WBO contenders, but they all do not want to fight him – home or away. We will go after them one by one to ensure he claims his rightful place in the division. “Energy belongs at the top and we want him in the ring with the top guys. Our message to them is stop taking any fight just to secure your ranking, the contenders in the top 15 should fight each other so that we can see competitive fights,” Tobias said.“Whether Energy’s effort to call out the top contenders will result in any tangible fights now or in the future remains to be seen.”
