NFA seeks sponsorship for local cup

The Namibia Football Association is seeking to secure a sponsorship of the NFA Cup, its national knockout competition which annually involves clubs from the premiership and lower divisions countrywide. The president of the association, Robert Shimooshili, is pleading with corporate companies to invest in the competition. “We are pleased that the MTC Maris Cup is ongoing and we have to thank the company for investing into football.“We are however still without a secured sponsor for the annual NFA Cup competition. This tournament is very important, because it allows players from across the country an opportunity to play against the bigger clubs,” Shimooshili said.The NFA CUP is also the competition recognised by the Confederation of African Football to determine our country’s representative in the CAF Champions League stages. It is for this reason the president of the association is pleading with the corporate community to sponsor the competition. The tournament was last sponsored by PstBet with the sports betting company announcing a N$6 million sponsorship towards the 2024 edition. With African Stars and Ongos Ladies FC winning the men’s and women’s titles, the competition was played in different parts of the country, attracting healthy numbers of spectators. The sponsorship from PstBet ensured that the cup tournament returned after years of inactivity due to a lack of sponsorship. African Stars Football Club is the team with the most cup victories, after having won it six times since it was in first launched in 1990. Tsumeb-based side Chiefs Santos FC has the second-best record, having won the competition four times. Tigers, Orlando Pirates, Black Africa FC have all won it three times, while Blue Waters, Liverpool, Ramblers, Eleven Arrows and Young African Football Club have each won a single title. The competition has had a history of not being contested due to a lack of sponsorship even though it involves most active clubs in the country. Previous sponsors of the competition include MTC, Leo, Bidvest Namibia as well as PstBet which sponsored last year’s edition.
