Kudus 3 defeat Sparta 2
Women's league thrills
Kudus established a 7–0 lead in the 10th minute and continued applying pressure, but Sparta had other plans and levelled the score before half-time.
Kudus Rugby Club 3 defeated Sparta 2 by 21-14 in a first league rugby division match played on Saturday at Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay.
Kudus established a 7–0 lead in the 10th minute of the game, and continued applying pressure, but Sparta had other plans and managed to level the score - which stayed the same until the first time whistle went off.
During the second half, both teams displayed well-orchestrated efforts, but Kudus showed more heart and clinched the win. Kudus scored three tries and converted all three. Sparta scored two tries and converted both.
Kudus inside centre Armand Visser, full-back Algirnon Kolz and open side flanker Irvin Damans each scored one try. Scrum-half Ray-Shawn Shoombe was responsible for all three conversions.
Meanwhile, Sparta’s number eight Elvis Kaengurova and open-side flanker Almercer van Wyk each scored one try. Fly-half Neil Grimbeek converted.
Kudus captain Damans said the match was played in good spirits.
"We lacked a little bit of fitness, but we still got the win. Our next game next week against the Dolphins won’t be an easy one. They beat Sparta so we need to return to the drawing board and prepare."
Goals galore
Wanderers Rugby Club defeated Oceans Rugby Club with an impressive 82-0 in an entertaining women's league match. Playing conditions were perfect for Wanderers. The floodgates opened with Wanderers scoring 13 tries with six conversions, and one converted penalty.
Oceans put on a decent performance but unfortunately didn't manage to score any points.
Wanderers’ right-wing Ida Visagie, with support from her pack of forwards, had a storming first half. She scored three tries with assistance from captain Merilees Govender. Second-row Lourencia Rooinasie, open-side flanker Euodia Bassingthwaighte, number-eight Mandie van Staden and outside centre Sune Wittmann each converted two tries.
Govender and inside centre Yanneke Lawrence both converted one try each. Wittmann landed six penalty kicks.
Govender said it’s always a different experience playing at the coast.
“We knew that Oceans was a new team, but we didn’t underestimate them. I’m glad that we played against them and I’m happy new teams are joining the league."
She added that their next game will be against United. “We played them before and, I must say, we have a score to settle."
