Khomas dominates at National Sanlam 3x3 Basketball Tournament
The Sanlam 3x3 basketball tournament, organized by the Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) and sponsored by Sanlam, concluded with Khomas emerging as the dominant force across multiple categories. Held over two days at the University of Namibia (Unam) Rundu campus, the event showcased thrilling displays of athleticism and competitive spirit from teams representing various regions of Namibia.
In the under-19 category, Khomas asserted their superiority in both the boys' and girls' divisions. The Khomas girls' team, led by captain Leena Iilonga, displayed remarkable teamwork and adaptability despite the initial challenges of unfamiliarity among players from different regions. "We didn't start with perfect chemistry, but we gradually understood each other's strengths and that made a difference," noted Iilonga, reflecting on their path to victory over Ohangwena and Oshana.
Similarly, the Khomas boys' team in the under-19 category demonstrated their prowess, securing a commendable second place behind Oshana, showcasing the depth of talent in their roster.
Moving to the senior categories, Khomas continued to dominate, with the senior female team clinching the top spot. Ashley Linda, captain of the Khomas Lite team, acknowledged the team's hard-fought victory, emphasizing the lesson learned from a closely contested final game. "Despite our win, our performance wasn't flawless. Underestimating our opponents almost cost us dearly. It's a reminder to respect every team, no matter their previous results," shared Linda, highlighting the competitive intensity of the tournament.
In the senior male category, Khomas again emerged victorious, while Erongo and Oshana settled for second and third places respectively. The master's category, making its debut at the event, saw Kavango claim the top spot, showcasing the sport's growing appeal across different age groups in Namibia.
Nigel Mubita, president of the NBF, expressed satisfaction with the tournament's success in promoting basketball throughout Namibia. "Having representation from all regions is a testament to the growing popularity and development of 3x3 basketball in our country," remarked Mubita, underscoring the federation's commitment to expanding the sport's footprint.
The tournament not only celebrated the sport's competitive aspect but also served as a platform for players to sharpen their skills and forge new connections across regional boundaries.
