The Namibia Rugby Union’s first division and women’s fifteens league continued in Walvis Bay on Saturday.

Dolphin Rugby Club defeated Sparta’s second team by 50-3 in an entertaining first-league match at the Jan Wilken Stadium.

The floodgates opened when Dolphin took a 7-0 lead in the 9th minute of the game and the Swakopmund club continued applying pressure. Sparta also came out determined, but was unable to break through Dolphin’s defence.

During the second half, Dolphin launched more well-orchestrated efforts, extending their lead even further until they clinched the win.

Dolphin’s scored eight tries and converted five. Dolphin’s hooker Popyeni Shikongo, fly-half Kyle Wentzel, and replacement Rashaad van Rooyen each scored one try. Outside centre Zinzan Steenkamp scored two while inside center Herman van Zyl scored three tries. Wentzel and left wing Lovelle Delie each scored one conversion and half-back Jaco Barnard scored three.

Sparta’s fly-half added a penalty goal.

In the NRU West/North first division, Dolphin maintained their winning record in each of their seven matches so far, leading with 32 points against Etosha (21 from seven, with four wins), Sparta I (20 from seven, with three wins), Kudus III (16 from six, with three wins) and Sparta II (one point from seven matches).

Good spirits

Dolphin’s captain Lorenzo Groenewald said it was a clean game played in a good spirit.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re getting there. Our next game will be against Kudus, which will be our last league game before the playoffs.”

Women’s league

Earlier, Kudus Bokkies defeated Oceans Rugby Club by 36-0 in a women’s league match.

Kudus scored six tries with three conversions. Oceans put on a decent performance, but couldn’t break through Kudus’ stubborn defence.

Kudus’ inside centre Levetine Boois, fly-half Nessy Jansen, lock Robyn Andrews and tighthead prop Faisal-Lee Tjivava each scored one try, while right flanker Sofia Noble scored two tries. Full-back Tiffany Lawrence was responsible for the three conversions.

Kudus’ captain Jansen said it was a good game.

“After our defeat last week against Trustco United, the girls really pitched up today and we managed to get the win. We built on everything we did wrong in our previous game and it went well. Next week, we will be going up against Wanderers, which will be a tough game. But we are preparing and we will be ready for them next week.”

Kudus (18 points) are now placed fourth, behind the leading three United (34), Wanderers (32) and Unam (31).
