Desert Run and Ride makes its mark

The Standard Bank Desert Run and Ride took place on Saturday.
The Standard Bank Desert Run and Ride ended successfully on Saturday.
More than 300 runners and cyclists entered the first-ever Standard Bank Desert Run and Ride event. The competition formed part of the Standard Bank Desert Festival, hosted by Walvis Bay Private School on Saturday.
The event saw 76 cyclists competing in the 20, 60 and 90 km cycling events, while 234 runners competed in the five, 10 and 21 km events.
Cycling
Jurgen Stander crossed the finish line first in the 90-km men’s category, followed by Brandon Stiger and Craig Hearn in third. There were no women competing in this category. Gerrit Derks was first in the men’s 60-kilometre category, followed by Ephraim Shozi, and in third place was Gerone Davis-Honeybal. Only two women competed in the women’s category. Marcell Eloff clinched first place, followed by Rene Strauss in second place.
Running
Veteran runner Tomas Rainhard clinched first place in the 21 km men’s category, followed by Petrus Shigwedhe in second and Tomas Andreas in third place. Pamela Virayai was first in the women’s category of the half marathon, with Arina Lensing in second and Emilia Nambahu in third place.
Simon Nakale clinched first place in the 10 km run men’s category, followed by Sakaria Tangeni in second place, and in third place was Shiimi Abrosius. Tuuliki Mweshendifa clinched first place in the women’s category, followed by Helena Kasera in second and, in third, Martha Namwandi.
Israel Kalume completed the 10 km run in his wheelchair.
"I’d love a better wheelchair equipped for competitions like this – but despite this, I am not giving up. I never will. I love sports," he said after the race.
Both young and old took part in the five-kilometre fun run, with many families viewing the event as a bonding opportunity. The youngest participant for the day was little Kesani Johannes (two-years-and-11 months old), who completed the five-km fun walk with his father, Theo Johannes.
