Melbourne (dpa) - Serena Williams ist mit einem hart erarbeiteten Sieg über die Tennis-Weltranglisten-Erste Simona Halep ins Viertelfinale der Australian Open eingezogen. Die 37-jährige Amerikanerin bezwang die Vorjahresfinalistin aus Rumänien am Montag in Melbourne 6:1, 4:6, 6:4.
Dabei ließ die langjährige Nummer eins Halep zunächst keine Chance, der erste Satz dauerte nur 20 Minuten. Danach steigerte sich die French-Open-Siegerin und agierte im zweiten Satz der nun immer besser werden Partie fast fehlerfrei. In dem hochklassigen Match schaffte Serena Williams zum 4:3 im letzten Durchgang das entscheidende Break und nutzte nach 1:47 Stunden den ersten Matchball. „Es war ein intensives Match mit einigen unglaublichen Punkten“, sagte sie. „Ich bin eine so unglaubliche Kämpferin, ich gebe niemals auf.“
Nächste Gegnerin ist am Mittwoch die frühere US-Open-Finalistin Karolina Pliskova aus Tschechien. Sollte Serena Williams erneut in Melbourne triumphieren, wäre es ihr 24. Titel bei einem Grand-Slam-Turnier. Damit würde sie den Rekord der Australierin Margaret Court einstellen. (Foto: dpa)
