Letzte Reiseetappe für Fregatte beginnt

Die südafrikanische Marinefregatte SAS Amatola wird nun von Walvis Bay aus zur letzten Etappe ihrer Heimreise nach Südafrika aufbrechen. Sie hatte in den vergangenen Tagen in Walvis Bay angelegt und empfing dort verschiedene geladene Gäste an Bord. Nach mehr als drei Monaten wird die Fregatte dann am 22. April in Simon´s Town zurückerwartet, wo sie am 16. Januar ihre Reise angetreten hatte. Hauptgrund der Tour war die Gedenkfeier zum Untergang des Passagierschiffes SS Mendi im Englischen Kanal vor 100 Jahren. Bei dem Unglück waren über 600 Südafrikaner ertrunken. Weitere Ziele auf der Reise waren Deutschland, Spanien, Ghana, Äquatorialguinea, Angola sowie zuletzt Namibia, wo die Fregatte teilweise an maritimen Übungseinsätzen teilgenommen sowie entlang der westafrikanischen Küste patrouilliert hatte.
