Willem Amutenya: Agribusiness pioneer makes waves

Willem Amutenya is a name that is synonymous with success and perseverance in the agribusiness sector in Namibia. Born in exile during the liberation struggle, Willem grew up in the picturesque village of Iihongo in the Oshikoto Region.

After completing his secondary education at Uukule Secondary School and Oshigambo High School, Willem enrolled at the University of Namibia to study education with a major in sciences. Upon graduation, he played a crucial role in the establishment of Rev Juuso Shikongo Secondary School as a dedicated biology, life science and physical science teacher.

In 2015, Amutenya ventured into agribusiness, focusing on poultry production in his village of Iihongo. Initially, his operations revolved around supplying Boschvelder chicks to farmers, selling fertile eggs to breeders, and supplying broilers to restaurants and events. Over the years, Amutenya expanded his business to focus on egg production, with a capacity of 1 000 layer chickens in 2021, which grew to 1 500 in 2023, producing around 1 300 eggs daily.

In addition to his successful poultry business, he is also committed to empowering other farmers through training and consultancy sessions on poultry and horticulture. These initiatives have not only helped farmers improve their production techniques but have also created a supportive community of agricultural entrepreneurs.



Fostering trust, loyalty

Despite his busy schedule as a teacher and a farmer, Amutenya remains committed to ensuring the highest quality standards on his farm. He emphasises the importance of honesty and transparency in all aspects of his business operations, from the age of the eggs supplied to the vaccination administered to the chickens. This commitment to integrity has earned Willem the trust and loyalty of his clients, ensuring his continued success in the industry.

Looking ahead, Willem is optimistic about the future of agriculture in Namibia, particularly with the growing interest of young people in the sector. He believes that agriculture holds the key to economic advancement and food security for the nation, and he encourages more youth to explore opportunities in this sustainable enterprise.

However, Amuntenya also acknowledges the challenges facing local farmers, such as stiff competition from imported products and inadequate government support. He calls for the full implementation of policies that promote local agribusiness, such as the Preference of Public Procurement Act, to ensure the growth and sustainability of the industry.
