Embracing challenges, driving growth in the ICT industry

In the fast-paced world of technology, individuals often find themselves asking "who am I?" For Shamillah Izaks, the answer is clear: She is the eldest of five siblings, a dedicated mother and a proud farmer's wife.

In 2012, Izaks embarked on a new adventure, transitioning into a career in the information, communications and technology (ICT) industry. Her perseverance has carried her, even though computers and memory chips were initially unfamiliar to her. She started in early January 2024 at Business Connexion Namibia (BCX), serving as an engagement executive specialising in Microsoft partnerships.

For Izaks, the ICT sector is appealing because it is always changing. “In a dynamic field like technology, one never stops learning. This constant evolution is what excites me most,” she said.

She views the sector as a place where people constantly share knowledge, expertise and experience, all of which foster growth. What truly drives her is the challenge. “Surpassing personal goals and achieving objectives brings immense satisfaction. Stepping outside my comfort zone is integral to my growth plan in the ICT industry."



Valuable advice

For those considering a similar path, Izaks offers valuable advice. Embrace the unknown, she urged.

“Don't let lack of experience hold you back. Curiosity and a willingness to learn are crucial assets in this ever-evolving field."

She also advised people to continually sharpen their skills by seeking opportunities to gain relevant knowledge and develop technical skills. Getting certifications and taking online courses can be valuable tools.

Izaks encouraged individuals to connect with others in the industry. “Attend events, join online communities and build relationships with professionals,” she said.

“Explore different areas within IT and identify what interests you most. Specialisation can be the key to success," she added.

"Growth often lies outside your comfort zone; don't shy away from new experiences and opportunities to stretch yourself."

She further emphasised that each individual's journey in the ICT industry will be unique. She encouraged aspiring professionals to stay passionate, keep learning and never stop challenging themselves. With its endless possibilities, the ICT industry offers a rewarding path for those with the drive and dedication to succeed.
