Breaking the Namibian TikTok charts
Junior Katoma, popularly known as Juju K, is a 16-year-old Namibian TikTok influencer with over 208 000 followers and over 4 million likes on the popular platform.
His journey on TikTok started in July 2021 when he posted a dance to the sound c20 on YouTube and it went viral. "This dance got around 200k views and since then my videos have done exceptionally well and now I’m here," the youth said.
He was inspired to start by a break-up.
"So I never told anyone about this, but it all occurred after a break-up with my ex, whereby I felt low-spirited and gloomy," he said. "Then I just decided to use the app to get things off my mind and do something just for fun, and it miraculously blew up."
The journey has been quite stressful at times, because he has to be persistent and remain on trend so that he stays at the top.
"Sometimes I got demotivated when I saw that some of my videos were getting low views, but I stayed consistent and eventually things turned out well," he said.
His highlights on TikTok include creating multiple videos that have reached over 1 million views and also becoming a brand ambassador for a food and beverage restaurant, Grill Addicts.
"I’m very proud of these achievements and I think they are the greatest highlights of my journey thus far," he said.
Among his challenges are the views – sometimes videos do not go viral and he has to go back to the drawing board. However, despite that, consistency and persistence are what keep him going.
A side hustle
Katoma aspires to be an economist or a marketing manager and views TikTok as a backup plan.
"I see it as a backup plan because I still want to finish school and go to university and become an economist or marketing manager, moving towards the commercial field," he said.
He does not view TikTok as a full-time job.
He explained that in a worst-case scenario, if the number of views dip or stay low, a contract could be terminated.
"TikTok or Instagram could announce that they are taking down their platforms or they could be sued, and you’re back to square one, so stay in school, study, and have social media as a type of side hustle."
Katoma sees himself becoming the biggest content creator in Namibia or Africa.
"It is completely possible and I just need to strategise for it and not only be a TikTokker but also a YouTuber as well," he said.
He encourages prospective Tiktokkers to do what makes them happy and to stay away from the critics who are always trying to put them down.
"Only you are responsible for your future and how you want it to be. Be committed and persistent and don’t get demotivated at all – keep pushing," he concluded.
