London (dpa) - Die britische Königin Elizabeth II. ist tot. Wie der Palast mitteilte, starb die Queen am Donnerstag im Alter von 96 Jahren friedlich auf ihrem schottischen Landsitz Schloss Balmoral. Elizabeth II. war länger als jeder andere britische Monarch vor ihr auf dem Thron. Sie war Staatsoberhaupt von Großbritannien und Nordirland und mehr als einem Dutzend weiterer Staaten, darunter Kanada, Neuseeland und Australien. Mit ihrem Tod geht eine Ära zu Ende. Beerbt wird Elizabeth II. von ihrem Sohn Charles (73). Queen-Enkel Prinz William (40) rückt zum Thronfolger auf. Nummer zwei in der Thronfolge ist nun der 9-jährige Prinz George. Obwohl die britische Monarchin über keine politische Macht verfügte, galt sie als eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten unserer Zeit.
