Hepatitis E weiterhin ein Problem

Windhoek (cr) – Laut der stellvertretenden Ministerin für Gesundheit und Soziales, Esther Muinjangue, verrichtet mehr als die Hälfte der namibischen Bevölkerung ihre Notdurft im Freien, was negative Auswirkungen auf die öffentliche Gesundheit hat, insbesondere auf Kinder und schwangere Frauen.

Muinjangue sprach anlässlich der ersten Gedenkfeier zum Welttoilettentag in Namibia seit seiner Einführung durch die Welttoilettenorganisation im Jahr 2002 und seit seiner offiziellen Verankerung durch die Vereinten Nationen im Jahr 2013.

Seit Dezember 2017 wurden in Namibia insgesamt 6 517 Fälle Hepatitis E gemeldet, von denen 55 Menschen seit Beginn des Ausbruchs ums Leben kamen. Laut Muinjangue zählen schlechte Hygienepraktiken zu den Hauptursachen für diese und viele weitere Krankheiten.

Der Gouverneur von Erongo, Neville Andre-Itope, betonte in einer Rede die Notwendigkeit gemeinsamer Anstrengungen bei der Bereitstellung von sanitären Einrichtungen und Hygiene für alle Namibier. „Lassen Sie uns in die Infrastruktur und die sanitären Einrichtungen investieren und uns weiterhin für die Hygieneerziehung einsetzen, um den allgemeinen Zugang zu sicherem und erschwinglichem Trinkwasser und sanitären Einrichtungen zu gewährleisten“, erklärte er.
