Energy gets ‘better’ Chinese opponent

The MTC Nestor ‘Sunshine’ Boxing Promotions has announced a change of opponent for WBO Africa champion Fillipus Nghitumbwa, who is set to fight on 27 April.
Nghitumbwa will fight China’s Dekang Wang for the WBO international Super Bantamweight title at the Ramatex Hall in Windhoek. He was initially due to fight another Chinese boxer, Zhong Liu.
“I am still happy to get this opportunity and will make the nation proud in honour of the late President Hage Geingob.
“I was aware of the first opponent, but I actually told my promoter that I wanted someone with a better record,” Nghitumbwa commented.
Nghitumbwa, who is the current WBO Africa super bantamweight champion, comes into the fight with a record of 13 wins and two defeats in his professional career.
Dekang Wang is the WBA Asian champion and rated the number one super-bantamweight in China. He is also placed at number 52 in the world since he has remained undefeated in nine fights.
The event of MTC Nestor Sunshine Promotions will further see a packed and exciting undercard, with some of those featuring on the undercard to be announced at a later stage.
The Bonanza will see two unique amateur encounters when Pieter Kotze squares off against Phillipus Shikongo in a 4-rounder, while women’s boxing will be on the card for a rare appearance.
“This serves as a reminder of amateur boxing development which aligns with late President Geingob’s philosophy of inclusivity (making sure no one is left out).
“The Legacy Fight, which was initially scheduled for 23 March, was postponed to the 27th of April in light of the passing of His Excellency Dr. Hage Gotfried Geingob,” promoter Nestor Tobias said.
Tobias maintained that the bonanza will serve not only as a tribute to the late President, but also as a symbol of unity and a shared purpose for the nation.
General tickets are selling for N$50, with VIP access going for N$200 and a table of 10 comprised of box, wine and dine costing N$20 000. Tickets are available at Webticket.
