Grove (dpa) - Mercedes-Zögling George Russell wird von der kommenden Saison an für das Formel-1-Team Williams fahren. Wie der englische Traditionsrennstall am Freitag mitteilte, besitzt der 20-jährige Brite eine Vereinbarung über mehrere Jahre. Russell führt derzeit die Fahrerwertung in der Nachwuchsklasse Formel 2 an. Wer 2019 an der Seite des Engländers fahren wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. Derzeit hat Williams, das von Mercedes mit Motoren beliefert wird, den Russen Sergej Sirotkin und Lance Stroll aus Kanada unter Vertrag. Stroll dürfte aber zu Force India wechseln, wo sein Vater Lawrence Anteilseigner ist.
Mit der Verkündung der Personalie Russell sind für 2019 noch vier Formel-1-Cockpits offiziell nicht vergeben. Der zweite Williams-Fahrer sowie beide Force-India-Piloten und ein Steuerkünstler bei Toro Rosso müssen noch bekanntgegeben werden. (Foto: dpa)
