Alexander Zverev erreicht Viertelfinale beim Turnier in Toronto

Toronto (dpa) - Titelverteidiger Alexander Zverev hat beim Tennis-Masters-Turnier in Toronto das Viertelfinale erreicht. Deutschlands Nummer eins gewann am Donnerstag die Achtelfinal-Partie gegen den russischen Qualifikanten Daniil Medwedew glatt in zwei Sätzen mit 6:3, 6:2. Den Punkt zum Matchgewinn verwandelte der 21-jährige Hamburger nach nur etwas mehr als 52 Minuten.
Im Viertelfinale des mit mehr als 5,9 Millionen Dollar (5,1 Million Euro) dotierten Hartplatz-Turniers trifft der Weltranglisten-Dritte auf Stefanos Tsitsipas. Der 19-jährige Grieche konnte sich mit einem Dreisatzerfolg (6:3, 6:7 (5:7), 6:3) gegen Wimbledonsieger Novak Djokovic für das Viertelfinale qualifizieren.
Im vergangenen Jahr konnte der an Nummer zwei gesetzte Zverev das Turnier, das abwechselnd in den kanadischen Metropolen Toronto und Montreal ausgetragen wird, gewinnen. Erst am Sonntag verteidigte er seinen Titel beim Turnier in Washington. (Foto: dpa)
