NANSO hosts mass rally
Journey towards 400 000 members
Building a legacy of high-impact advocacy and student leadership
The Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) hosted a mass mobilisation rally last Friday at the Khomasdal Stadium in Windhoek, where it launched its strategic goal to have a membership database of 400 000 and celebrated International Youth Day.
The rally brought together over 5 000 learners, students and trainees and is believed to be the biggest gathering of young people in the history of Namibia.
The Khomas Region was chosen as the pilot region to launch the mass mobilisation campaign with the journey toward 400 000 members.
Learners from various high schools took different routes to march toward the stadium. They enjoyed performances by local artists while registering to be part of the organisation, with over 3 000 registering for membership.
Nanso president Lucia Ndishishi committed that under her leadership, the organisation will remain the largest, most vibrant and most relevant movement for learners, trainees and students in the country.
She vowed to continue strengthening the relationships they have built with their stakeholders and partners and that they would seek out new ones. “We will continue to seek out smart partnerships and collaborations that deliver high impact,” she said.
She added that they will continue representing the rights, interests and aspirations of young people living in this country.
The organisation also reaffirmed its advocacy pillars, which are: Digital inclusivity and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in schools; higher education funding and student accommodation; quality basic education; sexual and gender based-violence (SGBV), mental health and well-being; sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and menstrual poverty.
Ndishishi further asked the learners attending the event to hold each other’s hands and stand by each other and commit to doing their part in amplifying Nanso’s advocacy, ensuring that every young person in Namibia has fair access to economic opportunity.
Currently, 33 000 members are part of the organisation. Learners can register at 12 high school branches and students at eight institutions of higher learning. For more information, contact Nanso secretary-general Dorthea Nangolo .
